Dr Valerie Obot started her academic career at Charles Walker International Nursery School, Calabar, Cross-River State and then proceeded to Federal Government Girls College, Calabar for her secondary education. Valerie spent one year at Federal School of Arts and Science, Aba for advance studies and then gained admission into the University of Calabar where she obtained a Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery degree MB.Bch. Dr. Obot carried out her post-graduate studies initially at College of Medicine, University of Wales, Cardiff, United Kingdom where she obtained a Diploma and later a Masters degree in Dermatological Sciences between 2003-2005. She also has a certificate in Airborne Infection Control from Harvard School of Public Health, Boston and a Masters degree in Public Health from University of Benin 2013.
Dr Obot gained employment into the Akwa Ibom State Government in 1991 as a Medical Of-ficer 1, and rose to the highest rank of Chief Medical Officer. Her immediate past portfolio was that of the Control Officer for the Akwa Ibom State TB and Leprosy Control Program where she also served as the Chairperson, National Control Officers Forum for Tuberculosis and Leprosy for years. She has been involved in the development of policies, manuals and strate-gic plan in Tuberculosis control in Nigeria. She has attended several International and Nation-al courses and conferences on Tuberculosis and Leprosy and presented scientific papers.
Dr Obot served as the National President of Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) an umbrella Organization of all female doctors and dentists in Nigeria from 2013 to 2015 where she floated the REACH- G project impacting on the lives of girls and changing their stories. Dr Obot is also the Regional Coordi-nator of NGOs associated with the United Nation Department of Public Information for sub Saharan Africa and has led delegations to United Nations for conferences.
Dr Obot has won several awards and honours and is currently serving as a Director in the Boards of Association of Reproductive and Family Health ARFH, Nigeria Stop TB Partnership and Initiative f or Prevention and Control of TB and lung diseases IPCTLD. She is also a Board Member of the Federal Polythecnic, Ukana, Essien Udim and Akwa Ibom State Polythecnic, Ikot Ekpene all in Akwa Ibom State
She is married to her best friend Arc Okon Edem Obot from Abak LGA and blessed with three children. Her hobbies are reading, travelling and Networking.
Dr Obot was appointed Permanent Secretary on 17th February, 2015 and is currently serving in the Ministry of Education. Her philosophy is SERVICE ABOVE SELF.
