IPCD, with funding from the Global Fund, carries out active search for persons with Tuberculosis (TB) in the communities in the 13 LGAs of Nasarawa State. This activity is carried out in collaboration with community based organizations (CBOs) that are operating in these LGAs. As part of our responsibility for ensuring that this activity is proceeding in the LGAs as planned, IPCD from time to time visits the LGAs to monitor how these activities are going on and ensure that the persons diagnosed as having TB truly have the disease.
Between 16th and 19th May 2022, staff of IPCD visited Doma, Keana, Kokona, Obi & Lafia LGAs to monitor the search for TB cases in the communities in the LGAs. During the visit, the staff verified information reported to it by the collaborating CBOs with the information in the facility registers at the TB treatment centres and in LGA TB register. Discrepancies found were reconciled and corrections made where necessary. From the visit, it was obvious that the TB active search in the communities is resulting in finding additional TB cases. Comparison of the cumulative number of TB cases in the LGAs in the four quarters before starting the TB search and the four quarters during the search showed that an additional 196 TB patients were diagnosed as a result of the activity. These patients would have been missed if the activity was not going on in the LGAs.
